A very long time ago when giants ruled the earth, two giants had a great fight that they started hurling rocks and sand at each other violently. After the battle, the two got so exhausted and eventually became friends that they forgot to clean up the mess they made. This was how the Chocolate Hills were formed.

According to legend, that is. Haha.

I still remember that moment when I read this story explaining the size and form of this breathtaking geological wonder. However, this is just one of the tales about the formation of the hills. There are few others.

Right after our stop at Bilar Man-made Forest, we drove straight to the Chocolate Hills. Although these are not fudge-like at all, these hills are still jaw-dropping! It is an unusual, natural structure in the heart of the Bohol island. There are almost 2000 limestone hills throughout the 20-square mile area. The hills are both symmetrical and conical and may be 100 to 400 feet tall. Although these grass-covered hills are usually green, they turn brown during summer (dry season)  making it earn its name “Chocolate Hills.”

It was tiring to climb up to the top of this hill but the view was worth it

Up to the viewing deck!

There’s a viewing area on one of the hills where you can park your vehicle. There are also souvenir shops in the area. But you will still have to climb an almost never-ending staircase to get to the top of the hill, which will give you an awesome view of the hills.

My poor friends!

Hillside

Actually, it was my second time to visit the Chocolate Hills. My first time, it was raining. This time, it was sunny. I have to say that I liked this place better when it’s raining. Haha. The heat of the sun made me sweat and feel sticky and I didn’t stay that long outside and hopped back into the van after just a few minutes. Or maybe, I’m just more of a “rain person.” The rain, for me, made the place a lot more magical. Or maybe because the first time I visited, it wasn’t just raining, the sun was also about to set.

Nevertheless, the Chocolate Hills is something you shouldn’t miss when you visit Bohol. :)
