Laoag City, Batac, and Paoay lie along the western portion of Ilocos Norte. These three destinations are often combined in a single tour due to their proximity to each other, making it easier for visitors to explore the cultural and natural attractions of the area. If you want a hassle-free trip and convenient transfers, consider getting a private tour. Klook offers a Private Laoag City Tour that includes several tourist spots mentioned in this list.

Suba Sand Dunes

Get ready to be blown (or thrown) away as you hop on a sand dune adventure south of the capital! The Suba Sand Dunes, popularly called Paoay Sand Dunes, spans 88 square kilometers of sandy hills and slopes overlooking the West Philippine Sea.

Get on a 4×4 truck and scream to your heart’s content as you cruise in the dunes. Just a reminder to hold on tight and securely handle your gadgets if you are bringing them to record the experience. Wait there’s more! A sandboarding activity usually follows a bumpy ride. And if you still have the energy and the budget, you can also get on an ATV ride.

TIP! The best time to go is late afternoon, so it’s not too hot, especially in the summer. Also, you get to witness the colorful display of sunset to cap off your experience. And did you know that this was the setting of the film Himala, top billed by Nora Aunor? So, if you happen to visit in May, don’t miss the Himala sa Buhangin Art and Music Festival!

The sunset afterglow.

You can book your slot for the 4×4 ride in advance from Klook! The package is already inclusive of sandboarding activity and a photo session.

Be prepared to get yourself covered in them as you hurl yourself into the shifting mounds and ridges of the La Paz Sand Dunes, covering a total area of 85 square kilometers. Trivia: The desert scene of the Filipino movie, Ang Panday, starring Fernando Poe Jr. was shot here.

Similar to Suba Sand Dunes, the 4×4 ride here is also usually partnered with a sandboarding experience. You can either do it standing up or, if you are not that confident with your balancing skills, you can just sit on the board and slide down the sandy slope. Paoay Church

Formally named Saint Augustine Church, the Paoay Church had its groundbreaking in 1694 led by the Augustinian friars; however, it wasn’t until 1710 when the church finally opened its doors to the public. Parts of it were damaged after the earthquakes in 1885 and 1865. It was then rededicated in 1896. It is one of the four Baroque Churches of the Philippines, collectively listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Before this, the church was also recognized as a National Cultural Treasure in 1973.

The design is a marriage between Gothic and Baroque styles, but Oriental elements are also apparent, particularly its walls and facade which incorporate Chinese and Javanese elements. Other notable features are the massive buttresses at the back and on the sides of the structure, which serve as added layers of protection from earthquakes.

Standing not far from the church is the three-story bell tower made of coral stone. During the height of the revolution against the Spanish regime in 1896, the members of the Katipunan used this as an observation post. It also served the same purpose for the Filipino guerrillas against the Japanese soldiers during World War II.

Visiting Hours: Daily, 8:00 AM – 11:55 AM; 1:30 PM – 5:00 PM. Note that the schedule may change, so it’s best to check the official Facebook page for updates.
Address: Paoay Church, Marcos Avenue, Barangay San Pedro, Paoay, Ilocos Norte

Kusina Valentin

Kusina Valentin is a restaurant located just across from Paoay Church. The restaurant was named after Valentin Diaz, a Filipino revolutionary who hailed from Paoay. He was a colleague of Jose Rizal in La Liga Filipina and also one of the founding members of the Katipunan, alongside Andres Bonifacio and three others. The architecture and interiors are reminiscent of a Filipino ancestral home.

The menu features all-Filipino items, but it highlights Ilocano dishes like igado, bagnet, binagoongan, poqui-poqui, dinengdeng, and insarabasab. But probably the most famous is the pizza selection, which tickles your curiosity with its Ilocano twist! Its signature Pinakbet Pizza, Bagnet Pizza, Longganisa Pizza, and Garlic Cheese are the bestsellers. But if the foodie in you can’t decide what flavor to get, you can order the sampler pizza, which includes four of the must-try flavors.

Operating Hours: Daily, 11:00 AM – 8:00 PM. Note that the schedule may change, so it’s best to check the official Facebook page for updates.
Address: Kusina Valentin, 14 McArthur Street, Barangay Sangladan, Paoay, Ilocos Norte

Laoag Cathedral & Sinking Bell Tower

Apart from becoming the seat of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Laoag, it also achieved its cathedral status in 1961. Tracing back its roots to the Spanish colonial period, the Saint William’s Cathedral, more commonly known as Laoag Cathedral, was founded by the Augustinian friars in 1580.

Originally made of wooden materials with thatch roofing, the structure, which follows an Italian Renaissance architectural style, was first constructed in 1612. Over the years, it powered through many restorations and renovations. Today, the church’s bell tower, nicknamed “Sinking Bell Tower”, also attracts curious visitors. Yep, you read that right: it’s sinking! According to the official website of the City Government of Laoag, the tower sinks into the ground at a rate of one inch every year.

Opening Hours: Daily, 6:00 AM – 7:00 PM. The schedule may change, so please check the official Facebook page for updates and announcements.
Address: Laoag Cathedral, A. Bonifacio Street, Barangay 14 (Santo Tomas), Poblacion, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte

Nagbacalan Loomweavers

The Ilocanos are well-known for their Abel Iloco or Inabel, which showcases the region’s creativity in textile crafts. These intricately woven fabrics that are uniquely Ilocano are made using traditional hardwood pedal looms. Although techniques and designs vary, one thing remains constant: the process is labor-intensive. Initially, the cotton yarn has to be prepared, but due to the scarcity of raw cotton, most of the threads used today are purchased.

A few towns in the region are still keeping the legacy alive and kicking. One of them is in Paoay, particularly in Barangay Nagbacalan. In 1992, the Nagbacalan Loomweavers Multi-purpose Cooperative was established. Here, you can learn the step-by-step process of creating Inabel and even try your hand at weaving. Don’t forget to check out the finished products, which make great pasalubong for yourself or your loved ones.

Opening Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM; Saturday to Sunday, CLOSED. Note that the schedule may change, so it’s best to check the official Facebook page for updates.
Address: Nagbacalan Loomweavers Multi-purpose Cooperative, 22 Barangay Nagbacalan, Paoay, Ilocos Norte

Museo Ilocos Norte

You will find Museo Ilocos Norte a good place to start if you want to know more about the history and culture of the province and the region. Located in the heart of Ilocos Norte’s provincial capital Laoag, the museum pumps important information about the region’s cultural heritage and diverse ethnicity through its collections of artifacts, old photos, native farming and fishing tools, local handicrafts, Ilocano house furnishings, and traditional clothing.

What was once a 19th-century brick warehouse building (Tabacalera) was transformed into a two-story museum. The building itself is a historical landmark that tells the province’s central role in the tobacco trade in the country during Spanish rule.

Opening Hours: Monday to Saturday, 9:00 AM – 12:00 PM, 1:00 PM – 5:00 PM; Sunday, CLOSED. Note that the schedule may change, so it’s best to check the official website or Facebook page for updates.
Entrance Fee: P50/person
Address: Museo Ilocos Norte, V. Llanes Street, Barangay 11 (Santa Balbina), Poblacion, Laoag City, Ilocos Norte

Malacañang of the North

Considered a national park, the Malacañang of the North, locally called Malacañang ti Amianan, is a public domain managed by the Ilocos Norte provincial government since 2010. In 1977, the Philippine Tourism Authority (now known as Tourism Infrastructure and Enterprise Zone Authority) led its construction with the intention of making it the official residence of former Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos and his family in the province.

Overlooking Paoay Lake, the two-story Bahay na Bato, which now functions as a museum, is the centerpiece of the five-hectare property. Four of the seven rooms were converted into galleries and showrooms, featuring old furniture, photos, and posters.

Opening Hours: Monday to Sunday, 9:00 AM – 4:30 PM. Note that the schedule may change, so it’s best to check for updates before going.
Entrance Fee: Adult, P70; Student & Senior Citizen, P50; PWD & Children (12 y.o. and below), FREE
Address: Malacañang of the North, Barangay Suba, Paoay, Ilocos Norte

Ilokano Food Trip

It’s impossible to leave Ilocos without falling in love with the food! In fact, some of our well-loved Filipino dishes originated here. We just make our own version of them and embrace them as our own. Here are some of the team’s favorites:

  • Bagnet. This is pork belly boiled and then fried at least twice in high temperature to achieve that right kind of crispiness. For this reason — its crunchiness, locals actually call it chicharon, a term all Filipinos know.
  • Igado. This is stewed pork with liver, and sometimes, other innards are added too. This might not be for everyone, but if you are an adventurous foodie, consider including this in your list food to try in Ilocos Norte.
  • Ilocos Longganisa. One of the main products of the province, it is made of pork mixed with tons of garlic, giving it that distinct garlicky and tangy taste.
  • Pinakbet or Pakbet. Who doesn’t know Pinakbet? Every Filipino household is familiar with this dish, which is a mix of vegetables and bagoong (fermented fish with salt). The kinds of vegetables used vary, but the staple ingredients are ampalaya (bitter melon), okra, sitaw (string beans), and talong (eggplant). In different parts of the Philippines, some use shrimp paste and include kalabasa.

These are just some of the gastronomic treats you can try while exploring the province. We already mentioned other must-try dishes like poqui-poqui, dinengdeng, and insarabasab.

Batac Empanada

You might be wondering why we didn’t include Ilocos Empanada in the previous section, but allow us to explain. As a distinct delicacy in Ilocos, we firmly believe that the Ilocos empanada deserves a spot of its own.

Although it was not originally from this region, it has become associated with the province due to the addition of Ilocos longganisa, which gives it a unique Ilocano flavor. Batac Empanada has a bright orange crust or wrap and usually contains shredded green papaya, egg, and longganisa. Sometimes bean sprouts are added too. You also have a choice to order extra longganisa or egg. For condiment, you’ll be handed two options: sukang Iloko (Ilocos vinegar) and ketchup. Our team got used to partnering it with vinegar, but according to some of our Ilocano followers, locals prefer ketchup. Others even like eating empanadas with both!

So with that, don’t leave without grabbing an Ilocos empanada, especially if you are making a stop in Batac. You can get your empanada fix at Batac Riverside Empanadaan, which houses several food stalls selling, well, empanadas! Here, you can also watch up close how empanadas are prepared and cooked. You’ll also find other fares like miki, mami, lomi, pancit, and grilled food.

Oh, by the way if you are visiting in December, you can experience the goodness of not only the empanadas but also the Empanada Festival celebration.

Speaking of festivals…

Tan-Ok Festival

Known as the “Festival of Festivals” in Ilocos Norte, Tan-ok Festival is one of the largest events in the province, and perhaps the grandest in terms of scale. Our team had the opportunity to witness and participate in the celebration in 2024.

Held annually in February, the festival aims to promote and showcase the culture and traditions of the province. One of the main highlights is a dance competition featuring 23 groups representing the 21 municipalities and 2 cities of Ilocos Norte.

PAGUDPUD THINGS TO DO

Although it is possible to explore Pagudpud from Badoc, it’s best to stay in one of the resorts or homestays in Pagudpud if you are after convenience.

There are two main tours from Pagudpud: North and South. North Tour will take you mostly around Pagudpud, but South Tour usually extends towards Burgos.

You can take a North Tricycle Tour. The rate starts at P600 per tricycle. Here are the typical stops:

  • Kabigan Falls
  • Patapat Viaduct
  • Timangtang Rock
  • Bantay Abot Cave

  • Dos Hermanos Island

We will discuss the stops for the South Tour, also known as the Bangui and Burgos Tour, in the next section.

If you are pressed for time, you can find tricycle drivers in Pagudpud offering a combined North and South tour package. The rate depends on the inclusions or stops, but the usual rate is at least P1,500.

Saud Beach

Saud Beach is widely considered the best beach in Ilocos Norte. It has also been recognized by the New York-based publication Travel & Leisure as one of the Best Beaches in the World. Located in Barangay Saud, this long, protruding cove features fine white sand, rows of swaying coconut trees, and a tranquil atmosphere. Additionally, since it faces the west, it grants a breathtaking view of the sunset.

Although there are budget-friendly lodgings and resorts in the area, the beach has not been overly commercialized and still maintains its rugged appeal. If you are looking for a full-service resort, you can check out Saud Beach Resort and Hotel, Palm Grove Saud Holiday Complex, and Hakuna Matata Saud Resort.

Address: Saud Beach, Barangay Saud, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Pancian/Pasaleng Beach

Past the Patapat Viaduct and near the border of the Ilocos Region and Cagayan Valley Region lies a long stretch of sandy shore that straddles two barangays — Pancian and Pasaleng. We are unsure of the name of the beach, so kindly let us know in the comment section of this article. Thank you!

Moving on, one of the popular establishments in the area is the Pannzian Beach and Mountain Resort. Looking forward to disconnecting from the daily hustle? This property offers an off-the-grid experience. That means no WiFi connection, no television, and no swimming pool. You can spend your time at the beach or their farm, surrounded only by nature. Additionally, the in-house restaurant uses locally sourced ingredients. The cheapest accommodation available here is around P3,000 per night, good for two people.

There are other resorts in the area, and this is just one of your options. But if you are interested in staying here, you can find this on Agoda.

Patapat Viaduct

Considered an architectural wonder, the Patapat Viaduct is an elevated and winding road that stands over 30 meters above sea level. It connects the Maharlika Highway from Ilocos Region to the Cagayan Valley Region and stretches for 1.3 kilometers along the coast, making it one of the longest bridges in the Philippines.

The viaduct acts as a shield against landslides, which used to cause vehicular accidents before it was completed in 1986. The road snakes along the coast at the foot of the mountain, and it also serves as an excellent viewing point to admire and take photos of Pasaleng Bay.

Address: Patapat Viaduct, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Kabigan Falls

Nestled at the foot of the mountain, the Kabigan Falls is one of the noteworthy inland attractions in Pagudpud. It features a 27-meter cascade and a natural pool with cool waters where some visitors take a dip. If you want to swim too, note that there’s no shower room in the area.

The jump-off point is at the Kabigan Falls Tourist Information Center, located along a barangay road adjacent to the national road. Your landmark is Balaoi Elementary School. At the end of this paved barangay road, your journey begins on foot from the trailhead. The scenic trek to the falls normally takes 15-20 minutes.

Visiting Hours: Daily, 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The schedule may change without prior notice.
Entrance Fee/Environmental Fee: P20-40 per person
Tour Guide Fee: P100-200
Address: Kabigan Falls, Barangay Balaoi, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Bantay Abot Cave

This is not actually a cave, but rather an archway that was formed by the wind and waves over a long period of time. Just south of Blue Lagoon, past Balaoi Point, Bantay Abot Cave juts out into a rocky beach along a coastal road in Barangay Balaoi in Pagudpud. Because of this natural marvel, tourists flock to the site to get a glimpse of it and take photos. Just be careful when trekking down the beach and up to the archway. The trail is strewn with sharp rocks and can also get slippery.

Address: Bantay Abot Cave, Barangay Balaoi, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

Blue Lagoon & Dos Hermanos Island

The Blue Lagoon Cove, locally known as Maira-ira Cove, is a small cove adjacent to Maira-ira Point, the northernmost point of mainland Luzon. From November to June, it beckons wave riders to its thrashing swells. But for those who just want to chill and enjoy the clear cerulean waters, the best time to visit is from July to October. The beach is blanketed with cream-colored sand — a mixture of fine sediments and smooth tiny pebbles.

About one kilometer north of the cove are two natural landmarks — the Dos Hermanos Island. Lying off the northeastern coast of Pagudpud, the island is characterized by two hill-like rock formations. According to a legend, the twin island-like rock formations emerged when two brothers, who promised to stay together until the end, perished during a storm. The name translates to “two brothers”.

Address: Blue Lagoon, Barangay Balaoi, Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte

BANGUI & BURGOS TOURIST SPOTS

Bangui and Burgos lie in between Laoag and Pagudpud, which are the chosen bases for tourists in Ilocos Norte. So whether you stay in Laoag or Pagudpud, it’s possible to explore Bangui and Burgos from your hotel.

South Tricycle Tour

If you are coming from Laoag, you’ll usually find tour packages that include Pagudpud attractions. The tricycle tour rate starts at P2,000 per tricycle (max of 3 pax).

If you are coming from Pagudpud, you’ll most probably encounter the term South Tour. This tour includes stops in Bangui and Burgos towns, which are located south of Pagudpud. The rate is P900-1,000 per tricycle. Here are the typical stops:

  • Bangui Wind Farm
  • Burgos Wind Farm
  • Kapurpurawan Rock Formations
  • Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

NOTE: Pagudpud-registered tricycles are not allowed to operate in Burgos. So if you want to go to Cape Bojeador Lighthouse and Kapurpurawan, you need to transfer and take a Burgos-registered tricycle. The fee is around P400 but this amount is usually deducted from the original tour rate. However, if you are coming from Laoag, you need to pay additional P400 for the tricycle tour. This is on top of the P2,000 standard rate.

Bangui Wind Farm

The Bangui Wind Farm is a project of the NorthWind Power Development Corporation. It consists 20 windmills lining along the coastline of Bangui Bay and overlooking the might waves of the West Philippine Sea. Phase I of this project covered the installation of 15 wind turbines. Phase II saw the addition of five more identical power-generating turbines, finally completing the project in August 2008.

These towering structures will “blow” your mind as you gaze at them, giving a larger-than-life feel. Standing close to one of these colossal “electric fans” remind me of the gigantic humanoid in the Japanese manga and anime series “Attack on Titan”. LOL

Entrance Fee: FREE
Address: Bangui Wind Farm, Bangui, Ilocos Norte

EDC Burgos Wind Farm

If Bangui Wind Farm turbines are the titans of the lowland, EDC Burgos Wind Farm turbines, on the other hand, are the giants of the highland. Located on a 600-hectare high ground, it is currently the largest in the country. It consists of 50 wind turbines spread across three barangays in Burgos: Saoit, Poblacion, and Nagsurot. The wind farm is owned and managed by the Energy Development Corporation (EDC) and was the second wind farm commissioned in the province.

Because of its elevated location, it provides visitors with stunning views of the ocean and the sunset (if you visit during dusk). You can also spot the windmills of its neighboring Bangui Wind Farm skirting along the shoreline of Bangui Bay.

Note: For safety, access to the viewing deck is not possible if the wind is too strong.
Entrance Fee: P20
Address: EDC Burgos Wind Farm, Kapurpurawan Rock Formation Access Road, Burgos, Ilocos Norte

Kapurpurawan Rock Formation

Located in Burgos and not far from the wind farms is the well-known natural attraction — the Kapurpurawan Rock Formation. The name is derived from the Ilocano word “puraw” which means white. This natural rock formation is aptly named as it is made of white limestone that has been sculpted by the elements, particularly the waves, over thousands of years.

To reach the site, you can either travel on foot for approximately 10 minutes from the jump-off point or opt for a horse ride which costs P100 for a round trip. The latter is a good option for those with mobility issues. If you prefer to walk, you’ll encounter a flight of stairs. But after this, the trail is mostly flat. Just make sure to wear comfortable shoes with thick soles. Along the way, you will come across a statue that depicts Biag ni Lam-ang (The Life of Lam-Ang), an Ilocano epic.

Visiting Hours: Daily, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. The schedule may change depending on the weather and other conditions.
Entrance Fee: Adult, P30; Senior Citizen & Students, P20; Child & PWD, FREE
Horse Ride: P100 (roundtrip)
Address: Kapurpurawan Rock Formation, Burgos, Ilocos Norte

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse, also known as Burgos Lighthouse, is one of the most recognizable cultural heritage structures in the province of Ilocos Norte. Standing atop Vigia de Nagparitan Hill, it is regarded as the highest-elevated active original Spanish-era lighthouse in the country. It was declared a National Historical Landmark in 2004 and a National Cultural Treasure in 2005.

Over 100 years have passed since its construction and inauguration, the 19th-century lighthouse is still functional. The main pavilion and three other rooms, which were previously used as offices and living quarters, were turned into galleries showcasing its history. Aside from the photos and posters with descriptions, the collection also includes artifacts like the original lighting apparatus.

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse marks the northwesternmost point of mainland Luzon.

Visiting Hours: Daily, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM. The schedule may change without prior notice.
Entrance Fee: Adult, P50; Senior Citizen & Students, P40; Child & PWD, FREE
Address: Cape Bojeador Lighthouse Road, Burgos, Ilocos Norte

ADAMS TOURIST SPOTS

Adams is a landlocked municipality cocooned deeply in a thick forest at the foot of the Cordillera Mountain Range. The waters of the Bolo River spring forth from this secluded town. It is home to several waterfalls and is riddled with hanging bridges. In the past, only motorcycles could access the narrow road. After road development, including the construction of concrete bridges, other types of vehicles can now access Adams. The entry point is via Pagudpud-Adams Road, right after the Patapat Viaduct and the Pannzian Beach and Mountain Resort.

If you plan to explore this off-the-beaten-path town, you must first register at the Tourist Center near the municipal hall and hire a guide. This is mandatory. The guide fee is P150-200 for up to five (5) pax. You can hail a tricycle or a motorcycle if you are not driving your own vehicle. Note, however, that there’s no definite terminal or station, and you might have to wait.

Adams Day Tour

But if you want a hassle-free trip, consider Klook’s Adams Day Tour with Pagudpud Sidetrip. The meet-up and drop-off point is at Ilocos Norte Capitol. The package already includes guide, roundtrip transfer, environmental fees, and entrance fees. Here are some of the stops:

  • Lover’s Peak
  • Anuplig Falls

  • Patapat Viaduct

Anuplig Falls

One of the must-visit waterfalls in Adams is Anuplig Falls. It features a 12-meter-high cascade and two catch basins for swimming. Exercise caution when swimming because there are also deep parts and slippery rocks. The water can be chilly, and during the rainy season, the current can become stronger.

Like most cascades, it involves taking a trail, which can be a feat if you are not really into hiking. But according to our teammate who went to see the falls, it was worth it! The lush surroundings and the cold water entice hike-weary tourists to have a refreshing swim. The trek takes around 45 minutes to an hour. For safety, it’s required to hire a guide at the tourist center near the municipal hall. The guide can also take you to other parts of Adams.

Visiting Hours: Daily, 6:00 AM – 6:00 PM. The schedule may change without prior notice.
Adams Guide Fee: P150-200 (for up to 5 pax)
Address: Anuplig Falls, Adams, Ilocos Norte

Inuwayan Farms

The town of Adams is also known as the cacao capital of Ilocos Norte. According to an article published by the Philippine News Agency, different varieties of cacao were introduced to the town in the 1980s, and since then, its production flourished.

A visit to the Inuwayan Winery, Nursery, and Farms proves how fertile and ideal the town’s land is for growing cacao and other plant produce. The property is owned by Dr. Bielmaju Walley, who is also a farmer. It promotes organic cacao production from propagation to finished by-products. The factory produces different chocolate products such as tablea and chocolate spread. Additionally, it offers seasonal fruit-picking activities.

Opening Hours: Contact the management through the official Facebook page (Inuwayan Farm Productions), mobile number, or e-mail address for reservation, schedule updates, and other queries.

TOURIST SPOTS IN SOUTHERN ILOCOS NORTE

La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc

The Saint John the Baptist Church, which dates back to the 17th century and is also called the Badoc Basilica, was granted the status of a minor basilica in 2018. This Filipino-Hispanic Baroque church houses the miraculous image of the Virgin Mary known as the La Virgen Milagrosa de Badoc. As a result, the basilica has become a popular pilgrimage site that draws many devotees.

The life-size statue of the Virgin Mary was discovered by fishermen in 1620. It is said that over the next century, despite their several attempts, the pirates have failed to destroy the revered image. At one time, the church caught on fire, but the image of the Virgin Mary remained intact. It is also believed that the image was able to prevent the spread of several epidemics.

Visiting Hours: Daily, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM
Address: Badoc Basilica, Soriano Street, Poblacion, Badoc, Ilocos Norte

Badoc Island

Covering an area of over 36 hectares, Badoc Island is a privately owned teardrop-shaped island about one kilometer off the shore of Barangay Pagsanahan Sur in Badoc town. Like an emerald stone with a gold frame, this untouched gem boasts a long stretch of cream-colored sand on the eastern coast, rock formations, and cliffs.

Explore the island, swim, chill in a floating cottage, take photos, or laze around the beach. If you want to go beyond the surface, the surrounding waters flaunt vibrant underwater scenery, making the island a destination for scuba diving, free diving, and snorkeling. During the right season, the island also appeals to wave riders.

The departure point to the island is from either Pagsanahan Sur Beach or La Virgen Milagrosa Cove. The boat ride takes 20-25 minutes. Please clean after yourselves if you are bringing food and drinks. Overnight stays on the island are currently prohibited.

If you are coming from Laoag and are gunning for comfort, you can look for package tours with roundtrip transfers and boat rides. Klook offers Badoc Island Tour from Laoag, inclusive of land and boat transfers, a professional driver guide, a picnic/floating cottage, and lunch.

Luna Museum

The Museo ni Juan at Antonio Luna, also known as Luna Museum, is a reconstruction of the ancestral home of the Luna brothers. Specifically, it commemorates the lives of Juan and Antonio, who played a crucial role in the fight for Philippine independence. The restoration of the middle-class bahay na tisa was carried out by the National Historical Institute and the Department of Public Works and Highways in 1977.

Upon visiting the museum, visitors are greeted by statues of Juan Luna holding a paintbrush and Antonio Luna wielding a sword. Juan Luna is considered one of the most accomplished painters in Philippine history. His Spoliarium masterpiece, depicting a Roman scene wherein fallen and dying gladiators are hauled to a dumping site, has become one of the most poignant symbols of the Filipino’s struggle against the Spanish regime.

Antonio Luna, on the other hand, was known primarily as a general who fought against the Spanish and American colonizers. He also used the pen name Taga-Ilog and wrote for La Solidaridad, a publication that advocated for Philippine independence.

Sitio Remedios Heritage Village

Sitio Remedios Heritage Village will take you back to the yesteryears of Ilocandia. The property, which is a resort and events venue, takes pride in its guesthouses that recreate ancestral homes from different parts of Ilocos Norte. Most of them are named after certain towns — Balay Batac, Balay Piddig, Balay Dingras, and Balay Baccara. Each has its own character and design, but all have that distinctively Ilocano style.

Upon entering this unique resort, you’ll be welcomed by rows of ponds leading to the statue of Saint Michael the Archangel, located just outside an onsite quaint chapel, the Capilla San Miguel. The beachfront property also features its main plaza — the Plazza Manzanilla — and a swimming pool, both overlooking Currimao Beach. This is one of the best spots to chill and watch the sunset.

Relax, refresh, and appreciate Ilocos heritage all at the same time here at Sitio Remedios Heritage Village.

Time: Check-in, 2:00 PM; Check-out, 12:00 PM

Madongan Dam

Fed by the Pasdan River, the Madongan Dam not only supplies water to surrounding towns but has also become a favorite hangout place for locals all year round. Located in the easternmost part of Dingras, the main tourist area is riddled with nipa huts.

In addition to swimming in the clear and cold water, visitors can also enjoy picnics and spend quality time with their family and friends. Some embark on a short hike for a view of the mountain range. Meanwhile, others just stop here to take some photos before moving on to the next attraction in the region.

Getting here is a bit tricky, especially if you don’t have a private car and you are not familiar with the area. Some parts of the road are not yet paved, so expect a bumpy ride. If you are coming from Laoag, consider joining a tour for a hassle-free trip. Klook offers a package that includes the Madongan Dam in its itinerary, along with roundtrip transfers, a guide, entrance fees, and environmental fees.

Pinili Inabel Center

Ilocos is renowned for its unique weaving style and technique, which has given birth to the exquisite “Inabel” or “Abel Iloko” fabric. This textile is known for its softness and durability.

Located in Pinili, the cotton capital of Ilocos Norte, the Pinili Inabel Center is one of the best places to learn about the art of creating Inabel. Its primary aim is to preserve the weaving tradition of Ilocos and promote its textile industry.

The center was inaugurated in August 2023 as a tribute to the National Living Treasure awardee, Magdalena Gamayo, who also celebrated her 99th birthday on the same day. Despite her age, Magdalena Gamayo is still actively weaving Inabel!

Opening Hours: Daily, 5:00 AM – 8:00 PM. The schedule may change without prior notice.

HOW TO GET TO ILOCOS NORTE

By Land

If you’re traveling from Manila to Ilocos Norte, whether by a private vehicle or public transportation, be prepared for a long journey. The travel time can take between 9 to 12 hours, depending on the road conditions, traffic situation, and the route.

Some of the bus companies plying the Manila-Ilocos Norte route are the following:

  • Fariñas Trans
  • Partas
  • GV Florida Transport
  • Maria de Leon Trans
  • Viron Transit

Fare: P800-1,600. The fare depends on the bus company, the bus type/class, and your point of origin in Manila.

By Air

To save time and make the most out of your Ilocos trip, it is recommended that you book a flight to Laoag City instead of spending hours on the road. Laoag International Airport (LAO) is the commercial airport of Ilocos Norte province, and Cebu Pacific offers daily flights to the province.

One of our team members flew with Cebu Pacific and it only took them one hour and 20 minutes to reach Laoag City! On top of that, the departure time is very favorable, 4:25 AM. This option is ideal for two reasons:

One, you will avoid heavy traffic on the way to the airport. Two, you will maximize your time on your first day because you’ll arrive around sunrise. You can check in or leave your bags at your hotel or resort, then start exploring while it’s still not hot. This is perfect for those who can only allot two or three days to explore.

Travel Time: 1 hour 20 minutes
Departure Time: 4:10 AM
