UNDERSTANDING LAIYA

When people say “Laiya”, they are usually referring to the southern coast of San Juan, Batangas, particularly three barangays: Laiya Ibabao, Laiya Aplaya, and Hugom. It’s best known for its long stretch of light-colored sand and gentle waves, perfect for leisurely swims, lounging by the shore, and getting into a bit of water sports. The water’s clarity can vary depending on the season and the crowd volume.

The coastline is dotted with beachfront resorts, offering various types of accommodations and water activities. Some private resorts offer day tour packages, allowing guests access to their amenities and services. For those seeking something more budget-friendly and a no-fuss summer getaway, there are also public beach areas. The most popular strip is in Barangay Hugom, located between La Luz Beach Resort and The Henry Resort Taramindu Laiya.

Other info you need to know:

  • Language: Tagalog (Dialect: Batangas Tagalog). While Batangueños can communicate with people from Manila, they use certain words that Manileños may find difficult to understand.

  • Modes of Payment: Cash. While some resorts accept credit and debit card transactions, most establishments prefer cash, especially those along public beaches like Hugom. E-wallets such as GCash and Maya are also accepted at some businesses, but you may encounter occasional transaction glitches. It’s still best to have cash on hand even before leaving Manila.
  • Electricity Info: Type A socket and plug, mostly. The standard voltage is 220V at 60Hz.

HOW TO GET TO LAIYA FROM MANILA

Laiya is roughly a 30-minute drive from San Juan’s town center, where the OLD Municipal Hall is located. The NEW San Juan Municipal Hall, meanwhile, sits along San Juan – Laiya Road in Barangay Buhay na Sapa, about halfway between the town center and Laiya proper.

If convenience is your priority, the best option is to travel by private car. Simply open Google Maps or Waze on your smartphone for easy navigation. The journey takes three to four hours, depending on the road and traffic conditions. Here’s a quick overview:

Private Car

  1. Drive through SLEX and STAR Tollway, then take either Lipa or Ibaan Exit. Both exits will lead you to Padre Garcia.
  2. Keep driving through Padre Garcia and Rosario. You’ll eventually reach San Juan town center.
  3. From the Old Municipal Hall, turn right onto San Juan – Laiya Road. Continue driving until you reach the Municipal Tourism Reception Area, which is located next to the New San Juan Municipal Hall.
  4. Drop by the Municipal Tourism Reception Area to pay the ecological fee. It costs P50 per person.
  5. After that, continue driving to your intended destination in Laiya. This can be one of the resorts or the public beach area.

Public Transportation

If public transportation is your only option, here’s how to get from Manila to Laiya using public transit. The travel time is around four hours.

  1. From Manila, get on a bus bound for San Juan, Batangas. One of the bus companies servicing this route is Alps, with terminals in Cubao, Buendia, PITX, and BGC. Travel time is around three hours, depending on the route and traffic conditions. The fare is around P300 per person.
  2. From the bus terminal in San Juan town center, make your way to the public market, located on Kalayaan Street. You’ll reach it in five minutes. Your landmark is Jollibee.
  3. From there, ride a jeepney or hire a tricycle to your chosen destination in Laiya. Just inform the driver where you’re headed. Jeepney fare typically ranges from P50 to P70, while the tricycle fare is more or less P350.

NOTE: Since we traveled by private car, we’re not sure if public transport like jeepneys and tricycles also stop at the Municipal Tourism Reception Area for the collection of ecological fees. We reached out to the Tourism Office of San Juan, Batangas on Facebook and were advised to either ask the driver or pay the ecological fee upon arrival at your chosen resort.

THINGS TO DO IN LAIYA BATANGAS

Because of its accessibility and proximity to Manila, Laiya has long been a top-of-mind destination for metro dwellers seeking a quick weekend break or summer escape. Here are just some of the things to do and places to visit:

Enjoy the Beach and Try Water Sports

This is probably the main reason you’re here. Laiya wouldn’t be what it is today without its beaches. Known for its long stretch of sandy shoreline and swimmable waters, Laiya offers the perfect balance of relaxation and recreation. Lounge by the shore, soak up the sun, then take a refreshing dip in the water. If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can try kayaking, banana boat rides, or other water sports.

Club Laiya Water Sports

Many beachfront resorts have equipment rentals, so you won’t have to go far to get your adrenaline fix. If you’re staying at a public beach, you’ll also find several operators there offering rentals and water-based activities.

Go Beach-Hopping

Club Laiya Beachfront

If you’re looking to explore beyond the main beach strip, some resorts and local operators can arrange boat tours to quieter sand pockets and rugged coves. While these spots are still on the mainland, they are often more conveniently accessed by boat.

The usual itinerary includes three stops — two coves and a snorkeling site. Boat rentals or beach-hopping tours cost around P3000, good for up to 10 pax.

Try a Unique Lodging Experience

Why not make your stay even more memorable by booking a night at a themed hotel? We’ve already mentioned Club Laiya’s two standout accommodations: Camperisti and Cocoons. Again, Camperisiti features Airstream-inspired camper trailers set right by the beach, while Cocoons presents sleeping pods designed like oversized cylindrical concrete pipes.

Camperisti Club Laiya Batangas

We’ve tried staying at a Camperisti unit, and the experience was truly one for the books! Every unit comes with its own porch and outdoor dining and lounging area. Cocoons units, on the other hand, are ideal for cozy, intimate stays, but they might not be the best option for those with claustrophobia. We haven’t tried the ones at Club Laiya, but we did experience staying at their branch in Calatagan.

Hike Mount Daguldol or Mount Hugom

If you’re also a mountain person, take this opportunity to hike either Mount Daguldol or Mount Hugom early in the morning. Both trails share the same jump-off point in Barangay Hugom. Whichever mountain you choose to hike, you’ll be rewarded with sweeping views of Tayabas Bay and other mountain peaks in the area.

Be sure to wear comfortable clothes and bring plenty of water and energy bars, especially during the summer months, when the heat can be intense.

After reaching the summit, make your way back down and treat yourself to a relaxing swim at the beach.

Visit Laiya Adventure Park

If you want a dose of excitement beyond the beach, Laiya Adventure Park is the place to go. Test your limits with obstacle courses, zip lines, wall climbing, and other outdoor activities to get your adrenaline pumping. It’s a great place for families and friends to bond over shared challenges and active fun. The park also caters to corporate team-building events, mixing business and leisure in an outdoor setting.

OTHER TIPS FOR THE POOR TRAVELER

  • Start your day early. Leaving Manila ahead of peak hours helps you avoid heavy traffic and gives you more time to enjoy the resort or beach instead of spending it on the road. This is especially helpful if you’re only going on a day trip.
  • Protect your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and stay well-hydrated throughout your trip. Bring essentials like hats, sunglasses, sunscreen, and a reusable water tumbler or bottle.
  • Please use coral-safe sunscreen or sunblock brands to help protect marine life. A study conducted by the Archives of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology revealed that many sunblock products contain chemicals like oxybenzone, benzophenone, and parabens that are harmful to marine life. Choose the ones that do not contain these chemicals.
  • Wear comfortable footwear or aqua shoes. The sand can be too hot when the sun is high, especially at noon.
  • Practice the “Leave No Trace” principle: Take Nothing But Photos, Kill Nothing But Time, Leave Nothing But Footprints! Let’s be responsible travelers.
