Nagasaki Prefecture, located along the northwestern coast of Kyushu, is composed of various mainland peninsulas and off shore islands. Its capital and largest city, Nagasaki City, was an important trading hub with Portugal and the Netherlands from the 16th to 19th century. The city is known for the Hidden Christian Sites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the devastation it suffered during the Second World War.
Nagasaki is connected to other cities within and outside the prefecture via JR Kyushu’s sprawling railway network. Fukuoka is the primary entry point to Nagasaki via the Fukuoka International Airport and JR Hakata Station. Coming from Fukuoka, you can either take the train or the highway bus. Here’s how to get to Nagasaki from Fukuoka by train and by bus.

Fukuoka to Nagasaki by Train
Nagasaki and Fukuoka are linked by JR Kyushu trains. There are two types: limited express trains and local trains. Limited express trains are faster than the local trains. Local trains will stop at every station between Hakata Station in Fukuoka and Nagasaki Station. JR Hakata Station is a major train station in Fukuoka and is the largest and busiest in Kyushu. This is the key jump-off point to other cities in the region for those traveling by train.
Since the launch of the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen in 2022, it became the preferred transportation to Nagasaki, cutting the travel time from around two hours to 90 minutes. The bullet train service currently runs between JR Takeo-Onsen Station and JR Nagasaki Station. Plans to extend the connection to Hakata is ongoing. In the meantime, the train route between Fukuoka and Nagasaki requires at least one train transfer, usually at JR Takeo-Onsen Station, the temporary terminal for the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen (Nagasaki Shinkansen).
Via JR Takeo-Onsen Station
- From JR Hakata Station, take the Limited Express RELAY-KAMOME or Limited Express Midori train to JR Takeo-Onsen Station.
- Get off at JR Takeo-Onsen Station, then transfer to the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen KAMOME to JR Nagasaki Station. Note that this is a cross-platform interchange, meaning you don’t need to change to another platform.
- Alight at JR Nagasaki Station.
Travel Time: 1.5 hours

Via JR Haiki Station
- From JR Hakata Station, take a Limited Express Midori or Limited Express HuisTenBosch train to JR Haiki Station.
- Get off at JR Haiki Station, then transfer to Rapid Seaside Liner on Omura Line Rapid train bound for Nagasaki.
- Alight at JR Nagasaki Station.
Travel Time: Approximately 4 hours

JR Kyushu Pass
Should you decide to take the train, JR All Kyushu Pass and JR Northern Kyushu Rail Pass cover this route. But if you are only traveling around the northern portion, JR Northern Kyushu Rail Pass is the better option. This pass is available in 3-day and 5-day options, and must be used on consecutive days within the selected duration. JR Southern Kyushu Pass and JR All Kyushu Pass (entire Kyushu region) are also sold; therefore, make sure that you will purchase JR NORTHERN Kyushu Pass.
If you are exploring Fukuoka, Nagasaki, Oita, and Kumamoto, the JR Northern Kyushu Pass gives you unlimited rides on local trains and limited express trains operated by JR around the area. You can also enjoy unlimited travel on Kyushu Shinkansen (Hakata – Kumamoto) and the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen (Takeo-Onsen – Nagasaki) with this pass.
However, if you want to visit more prefectures in the Kyushu region in a single trip, consider getting the JR All Kyushu Rail Pass instead. In addition to the prefectures mentioned above, this also covers Saga, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima. Pass options available with 3-, 5-, and 7-day validity.

Fukuoka to Nagasaki by Highway Bus
Highway buses or long-distance buses also ply the Fukuoka-Nagasaki route. Buses have stops at Fukuoka Airport, Hakata Station, and Tenjin Bus Center in Fukuoka and Nagasaki Station in Nagasaki. The travel time is approximately two and a half hours, depending on the destination in Oita Prefecture.
